Being more casual

2025-11-04

I've always noticed how being too respectful oftentimes leads to people feeling less comfortable around me.

For example, in Chinese culture it's respectful to not let your guard down at a host's palce. Even when the host says to relax, your shoulders never really let go.

This display of respect is really helpful with showing respect, however when it comes to accepting your message, people won't see your words as authentic.

This is a huge issue when it comes to American corporate culture, it's easy to slip into this respect-abiding practices by habit, but the most important lesson is to always keep things casual.

What does this look like? It's talking to potential clients as friends instead of doing a formal presentation, using casual words for your LinkedIn post, and generally taking up more space.

There's a disconnect I feel as a Canadian born Chinese where I'm balancing these two cultures, and if I leave ourselves on autopilot, I'll won't be in the right mode to deliver a lasting impression.
